History
The Community Cup is a charity footy match that takes place in Melbourne, where the town’s music and community radio communities get down in the mud to raise money for a good cause.
This year it’s back, after a year’s hiatus. See you there - June 21 at Elsternwick Park.
For those who are after a bit more detail, we’ve taken this historical account from the public’s wealth of knowledge over at the Community Cup Wikipedia page:
The annual event first began in 1993, with a game between the Espy Rockdogs and the Tote Hotel, and raised $500. It was first known as the Community Cup in 1997 after attracting the attention of 3RRR and PBS FM, and raised over $6000 in front of 2000 people at the Ross Gregory Oval in St Kilda. It subsequently moved to the Junction Oval, a former Victorian Football League venue, where audiences have continued to grow in recent years. It first packed the venue to capacity in 2005, attracting 23,000 people, did so again in 2006, despite the installation of temporary fencing to accommodate more spectators and again drew a large crowd in 2007, despite the introduction of an entry charge for the first time.
It is promoted as being “kid and dog friendly”, and even with big crowds and the free flowing alcohol from several beer tents, it is a trouble free and casual event.
In 2009 the event has a new charity, Reclink and will be going ahead at Elsternwick Park on the 21st June.
